A picturesque place in the easternmost part of the island of Korcula,
with typical
family houses
(citadels), nice
sand beaches and
numerous islets
and coves, has a
long tradition
in adventurous
"Robinson-style"
tourism. Apart
from quality
accommodation
facilities and
sports and
recreational
opportunities,
another major
attractive
characteristics
is the beautiful
natural
environment of
Lumbarda. From
its very centre,
the way leads
through an alley
of
mulberry-trees
to beautiful
vineyards on
fine reddish
sandy soil. Such
sand is an ideal
type of soil for
the cultivation
of vines.
Lumbarda is the
cradle of Grk, a
sort of vine
which some
experts consider
the
autochthonous
Dalmatian, while
the other, due
to its name,
conclude that it
must have
originated from
Greece, from
where it came in
ancient times.
An enormously
rich gastronomic
offer
(prosciutto,
fresh and salted
fish) includes
fruit and
vegetables grown
in local
gardens.
Lumbarda is
not only famous
for its
interesting
historical
heritage but
also for its
traditional
culture. Folk
songs, customs
and dances have
been cherished
for ages. An
important event
during the
carnival is the
"picking of
oranges", when
the entire
village, with
dances and
songs, pays
tribute to local
beauties and to
the head of the
village. Another
interesting
feast is St.
Roch's Day
(Rocco's Day) on
the 16th of
August.
Occasional
entertainment
and cultural
programs are
organized during
the tourist
season.
Marina has
170 berths in
the sea and 40
places on the
land.
LUMBARDA,
a village and
harbour in the
easternmost part
of the island of
Korcula, between
the coves of
Przina and Bili
Zal, 6 km
southeast of the
town of Korcula;
population
1,102. East of
the village is
the Lumbarda
field,
consisting of
reddish and
yellowish soils
(Pleistocene
sand), which
offer excellent
conditions for
viticulture
(famous wine
Grk). Economy is
based on
farming,
fishing,
processing of
stone and
tourism.
Underwater
fishing is
possible from
Bili Zal to
Vrbovica.
Lumbarda is
located on the
regional road,
which connects
Lumbarda with
the town of
Korcula.
Several
fragments of a
Greek
inscription from
the 4th century
BC, carved in
stone (today
kept at the
Archaeological
Museum in
Zagreb), as well
as the ruins of
the mediaeval
church of St.
John, have been
found on the
Koludrt hill,
north of the
village. The
Greek
inscription is a
psephism
(assembly
resolution)
about the
distribution of
land to the
inhabitants of
the newly
established
colony. Apart
from the Greek
names, the list
of colonists
includes also
some Illyrian
names. Some
other Greek
artefacts have
also been found
in the area
around Lumbarda
(pottery,
coins). Lumbarda
features the
mediaeval parish
church of St.
Roch (Rocco)
(reconstructed
in 1561 and
1886), several
summer mansions
of the former
patricians of
Korcula (erected
from the 15th c.
onward), the
birth-houses of
the sculptors
Frano Krsinic
(1897-1982) and
Ivan Lozica
(1910-1943, with
a memorial
plaque).
