Racisce is a small traditional fishing village located on the northern coast of the island of Korcula. It is 12 kilometres from the town of Korcula or 15 minutes’ drive by car. People from Herzegovina and Makarska, on the mainland of Croatia, arrived during the 17th century and were the first to settle Racisce. From 1900 until 1945 the village derived its’ income from trading ships owned by local families. Timber, olive oil, stone and wine were traded. In 1943 Josip Tito nationalised the shipping industry, forcefully removed the fleet of 35 ships putting them under state control and deprived the village people of their livelihood. At the end of World War 2, large scale migration took place from Racisce when vast numbers of people left for New Zealand, Australia and the USA, to seek out a more prosperous lifestyle. The population went into decline and today it stands at a mere 400 inhabitants. Seafaring has remained a strong influence here and many of the men are still employed in jobs relating to the sea. The traditional farming practises of olive oil production and wine making have continued and in recent years stone masonry and building construction have also become prominent. The timeless, old village is proud of its 2 churches, one of which is 300 years old. Racisce enjoys 3 small, white pebble beaches and crystal clear, warm water for swimming. For the more adventurous there are walks past the olive groves to the nearby beaches of Vaja and Samograd or to the village of Kneže. A longer walk to Pupnat offers stunning, elevated sea views and a stroll through brilliant blue sage. Village facilities include 3 restaurants, a post office and a mini supermarket. Visit Racisce, and enjoy the beautiful, relaxed atmosphere of one of Korcula’s small, unique traditional villages. |
